Emirates Global Aluminium Launches E40 Technology Upgrade Pilot at Al Taweelah Smelter

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has launched a technology upgrade pilot at its Al Taweelah aluminium smelter, targeting higher productivity, improved energy efficiency and lower carbon intensity.
Pilot Programme Scope
The pilot will deploy upgraded E40 technology across 13 DX-technology reduction cells to validate the technology’s real-world performance. Once proven, the upgrade will be rolled out to all 808 DX reduction cells across Potlines 1 and 2 at the Al Taweelah facility.
Expected Performance Outcomes
If implemented across the full 808-cell fleet, EGA’s E40 technology is projected to increase annual hot metal production from the two potlines by 67,000 tonnes.
The upgrade will also reduce net specific energy consumption, and associated carbon dioxide emissions from power generation, by approximately 6% per tonne of aluminium produced.
Accelerated Rollout Tied to Smelter Restoration
EGA has fast-tracked the E40 pilot programme to align the technology upgrades with the ongoing restoration of the Al Taweelah smelter. The facility was forced into an emergency shutdown following Iranian strikes targeting the Khalifa Economic Zone in Abu Dhabi.
