Speira completes €11 million aluminium recycling furnace investment
Speira has celebrated the commissioning of four aluminium recycling furnaces after a €11million investment.
A total of two tilting rotary furnaces have been installed and commissioned at each of the Töging and Grevenbroich sites in Germany.
The new units replace older equipment and the company said set new standards in terms of efficiency, technical progress, occupational safety and environmental performance.
The furnaces are used to recycle aluminium from scrap and dross, which, due to their impurities, can only be processed in this type of furnace.
Einar Glomnes, CEO of the German-Norwegian aluminium company, said: “We take a holistic view of our contribution to a circular world that works.
“That is why we look not only at pure, easily recyclable scrap, but also at the more challenging lower-grade materials and by-products.
“Wherever aluminium is contained, we want to get the maximum back out of it, return it here to our cycles and prevent it from being exported to other parts of the world.
"With these new recycling furnaces, we can now recover even the smallest quantities that were previously lost from our material flows.”
Speira has invested around €11 million in the four furnaces. This includes extraction hoods, thermal after-combustion systems, pipework and other infrastructure.
For employees, working on the new units will be even easier and safer: the individual components are easily accessible for maintenance, and the molten metal can be cast whilst the furnace doors are closed.
The four new furnaces meet the highest environmental standards for new plants; the new burner technology increases productivity, produces less CO₂ and is ‘H₂ ready’ – meaning the furnaces can also be operated using hydrogen in future.
The decision to invest in the four furnaces was taken in July 2024.
The first furnace in Grevenbroich started production in June 2025, followed by the first furnace in Töging in October 2025, the second furnace in Grevenbroich in May 2026, and now the second furnace in Töging.
