Cameroon Plans Alumina Refinery; Hearings Set for October
According to reports on October 9, public hearings regarding Camalco Cameroon’s proposed alumina refinery are scheduled for October 12–17, 2026. Camalco is a subsidiary of the Australian-registered company Canyon Resources. The hearings will review the project's environmental and social impact assessment; the refinery is linked to the Minim-Martap bauxite deposit in the Adamawa Region. The Ministry of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development announced the hearings in a public notice, stating that sessions will be held in Ngaoundéré and Martap. Mobile teams will visit nearby communities, allowing residents to review the assessment report and express their views on the project's potential environmental and social impacts. These hearings are part of the review process and do not constitute a construction permit or a final investment decision.
