Vedanta Hits Record Aluminium & Alumina Output in Q2 FY2027
Vedanta Achieves Record Quarterly Aluminium and Alumina Production in Q2 FY2027
On October 3, 2026, Indian mining and metals conglomerate Vedanta Limited released its production report for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 (Q2 FY2027), covering July to September 2026. The company posted all-time high quarterly output for both primary aluminium and alumina, driven by capacity expansion and operational efficiency improvements.
Quarterly Production Breakdown: Alumina Output Surges 37% YoY
Vedanta’s total primary aluminium production reached 649,000 tonnes in Q2 FY2027, up 5% year on year and marking a new quarterly record for the company. Alumina output saw a far steeper increase, rising 37% year on year to 895,000 tonnes, also hitting an all-time high. Production of value-added aluminium products climbed 31% from the same period last year, reflecting the company’s expanding downstream product portfolio.
BALCO Smelter Expansion Hits 50% Capacity Milestone
Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), Vedanta’s subsidiary, continued its capacity ramp-up through the quarter, producing 178,000 tonnes of aluminium, up from 168,000 tonnes in Q1 FY2027. The company confirmed that the second phase of its 525kA potline has been commissioned, bringing the 435,000-tonne-per-annum BALCO expansion project to 50% of its targeted capacity. The remaining capacity is scheduled to come online in the coming quarters, supporting further production growth for the group.
H1 FY2027 Cumulative Performance and Demand Drivers
For the first half of FY2027 (April–September 2026), Vedanta’s cumulative aluminium production totalled 1.281 million tonnes, while cumulative alumina output reached 1.721 million tonnes. The company attributed the growth to higher utilisation at existing facilities and the commissioning of new smelting capacity. On the demand side, India’s automotive sector and broader domestic downstream industries provided solid support for production expansion.
Market Implications: India Emerges as Key Global Aluminium Supply Driver
The latest results signal two notable trends for the global aluminium market, according to industry analysis from AluLink. First, the BALCO expansion is only halfway complete, meaning additional capacity will continue to be released over the next few quarters, underpinning sustained output growth at Vedanta. Second, the 37% jump in alumina production far outpaces the 5% growth in aluminium output, indicating that upstream refining capacity is expanding faster than downstream smelting capacity. This aligns with the broader loosening of supply in the global alumina market.
India is solidifying its position as one of the most reliable sources of incremental aluminium supply worldwide. For the Chinese market, growing supply from Asia will intensify regional competition, while also creating new opportunities for Chinese equipment, technology and raw material exports.
Looking ahead, Vedanta’s ongoing capacity ramp-up and operational upgrades are expected to continue lifting production volumes in the second half of FY2027. The company’s growth trajectory reinforces India’s rising influence across the global aluminium value chain, from upstream alumina refining to high-value downstream products.
